about organic dairy farmers of australia
A cooperative owned and operated by organic farmers located across Victoria was originally formed in 2002. It is Australia’s largest supplier of organic milk, supplying to Five: AM Organics (for yoghurt), Pepe Saya (speciality butter), Parmalat (pure organic milk), Lemnos (organic feta) and Bellamy’s (organic infant milk formula). It also operates under its own brand, True Organics.
Since establishment, the company invested in its North Geelong facility and, in 2018, announced a joint venture to design, construct and operate a dedicated organic spray-drying facility in North Geelong to create Australia’s first organic milk powder.
From the owners
“The company (ODFA) was initially formed for cooperative members to pool milk supply and trade milk to customers and we relied on contract manufacturing to manage the milk supply. In 2016, ODFA invested in a milk processing plant in North Geelong and redefined the business. Through a combination of reinvestment and government grants, our facility became ‘Australia’s Organic Dairy Centre’ with increased processing facilities. We teamed up with Wattle Health Australia and Niche Dairy in 2018 to form the Corio Bay Dairy Group and, together, we are building a dedicated organic spray dryer – the only one of its kind in Australia. The facility will process organic, nutritional powder products such as infant formula and toddler formula. The joint venture arrangement ensures that spring surplus organic milk has a customer, contributing to the premium price our cooperative farmers are paid for their milk.”
